Learn Guitar Online - Which One of These 3 Learning Guitar Mistakes Are You Making?

Guitar playing should be a lot of fun. I've just completed a Google search for "How To Play Guitar" and received 16,300,000 results, wow - with this sort of help learning the guitar should be a breeze for everyone. So why do we have more confused, frustrated and aggravated guitar players than at any other time in the history of the instrument?

We can't say we don't have enough information ... the world is saturated with it and we can access this information 24/7/365, so that can't be the problem.

The problem can't be lack of quality instruments, recording equipment, signal processors or software every music store online and offline are packed to the rafters with stuff ...

It's because guitar players constantly make one (or more) of three common learning guitar mistakes. Here they are ... see if any of these scenarios are familiar to you.

Learning Guitar Mistake #1: Constantly buying new information - and getting more and more confused!

The Problem: the golden rule with information is QUALITY not quantity... if you got it for free, you probably paid too much for it!

Who cares if you can download 1,700 "How To Play Guitar" videos for free, if they are all little disjointed snippets of random information, you would be better off without them!

The Solution: structure and order

Without structure and order you have chaos ...

The only way we make progress in any field of endeavor is to learn in an organized manner. We learn fact "A" then move on to fact "B". Fact "B" sits on the shoulders of "A".

Moving to "B" without understanding "A" is a recipe for disaster. Only when you have absorbed and applied the information do you "own" it.

One of the major issues with learning the guitar in the 21st century is that there are so many self appointed "experts" ready to share their information.

Recently I came across a well known "learn guitar" website where the guitar instructor was giving a demonstration of the 12 bar blues, the only problem ... he played an 11 bar blues, now if you were a beginner how would you know?

Remember, you can't learn skills from someone who does not have them ... you would be well advised to do your research on the source of the information before you waste your time and money on random, unstructured, messy stuff.

Learning Guitar Mistake #2: Practicing endlessly - and can't remember what you have learnt!

The Problem: information overload - what's the point of learning something if you can't remember it?

You could have saved yourself a lot of bother by not learning it in the first place, the result would have been the same.

The Solution: learn how to practice in a rewarding, motivating way. Ask yourself questions such as ...

(a) What style of guitar playing do I want to play? rock, blues, country, jazz, folk, bluegrass etc

(b) Do I want to play electric or acoustic guitar?

(c) Do I want to learn how to read standard music notation? (recommended)

(d) If you are learning new information keep your practice sessions short 3 - 5 minutes.

(e) Correctly diagnose your practice problems are they physical issues (motor skills) or long term memory problems (data memory).

(f) Learn to slow everything down to a tempo where you cannot possibly make a mistake then gradually bring the tempo up to performance speed.

(g) Set yourself musical goal(s), write them down and review them often.

(h) Research a guitar course that is relevant to your particular style and interest and make a daily practice commitment to improve your guitar playing.

Learning Guitar Mistake #3: Relentlessly Investing in guitars and sound equipment - looking for the Holly Grail!

The Problem: there isn't any music in a guitar/amp/effects unit etc

The Solution: learn musical skills and apply them to your instrument.

Once you understand that no matter how much money you invest in musical equipment it can never replace musical skills.

It's the old story "junk in ...junk out!"

A hack guitar playing with an expensive top-of-the-line Gibson guitar is still a hack guitar player.

For many would-be players hours spent buying musical stuff is a great diversion from the real job of serious guitar practice.

Of course, you should play a good quality instrument (notice I did not say expensive), once you have your quality instrument it's time to roll up your sleeves and get into the practice.

Musical instrument companies spend untold fortunes marketing products in a way that makes 'newbie' players feel like they cannot possibly live (or progress) without the latest guitar gadget or gimmick.

Important: Music is something we all have inside ... we just have to work on getting the music out. You don't have to go out and buy stuff, music is not something external, it's exists internally in every human being.

A guitar is just a tool for musical expression, it is to the musician what a computer is to a writer, a tool for expression.

Spend your time improving your musical skills and applying the language of music to the guitar and you will reap rich rewards of musical expression and enjoy the real fun of playing guitar.

Learning Guitar - The Difference Between Acoustic and Electric Guitars

Learning guitar

Most people like the thought of being able to play a musical instrument and one of the most popular choices is to play guitar. Nearly all the songs we hear on the radio and television have guitar as an integral part of the song. This helps give guitar its appeal to people because they have a desire to be able to play the songs they know and like.

When you are first thinking about playing guitar the obvious question that arises is 'should I learn to play acoustic guitar or electric guitar?'. Here are some things to consider when you are thinking about which type of guitar you want to learn on.

Learning to play an acoustic guitar

Acoustic guitars are great for a lot of reasons. First of all they look great. As simple or trivial as that may sound its nice to have a guitar that looks cool. Acoustic guitars look good when people are playing them and they also look great just sitting in the corner of a room or even resting on the sofa. Another great thing about acoustic guitars is that you don't require an amplifier to get a good sound out of them. As the name suggests, they sound good acoustically. When played an acoustic guitar compliments vocals very well, also without amplification. And you can always plug and acoustic guitar into an amplifier or a p.a. system.

That's one important thing to consider when thinking about learning to play guitar. Do you want to be able to take it places and play so you can hear the guitar well without having to carry around other equipment? Another thing to think about is if you are wanting to play solo or with other acoustic instruments or do you want to play in a band with louder instruments? Playing in a band situation raises the question about learning to play on an electric guitar.

Learning to play an electric guitar

Like acoustic guitars, electric guitars look great. As the name suggests, you need to plug an electric guitar into an amplifier to get an audible sound from the guitar. One benefit of an electric is that you can play it quietly when not plugged into an amp, or through an amp with headphones. So you can play in one room and someone won't hear you in the room next door. To state the obvious, acoustic guitars are louder instruments acoustically than electric guitars. However if you want to play with friends in a band, especially when there is a drummer, then you will most likely want to use an electric guitar so you can get the volume you need.

Electric guitars are also better instruments for playing lead guitar on than acoustics. Acoustic guitars are great for chords, but when you go to play lead the sound is not very rich and the notes don't sustain very well. On an electric guitar, the notes sustain for much longer periods of time. This gives playing solo notes a fuller, richer sound.

As well as sound, another fundamental difference in playing an acoustic guitar compared with an electric guitar is the amount of strength required to play each instrument. You need more strength go play an acoustic guitar than you do an electric guitar. String tension on acoustic guitars is tighter than the string tension on electric guitars, this makes acoustic guitars harder to play. Especially for beginner guitar players. Although having sore fingers from playing guitar for an hour or two is actually quite a good feeling. Playing regularly builds up strength in the hands making it easier to play guitar over time.

You should also keep in mind the types of songs and music you wish to play. If you want to play songs that are recorded with acoustic guitar then you obviously want that acoustic sound, so an electric is probably not the right choice for you.

Keeping the above in mind, you'll be better equipped when deciding what type of guitar is the right guitar for you. Whatever your choice, guitars are great instruments to learn and play, both acoustics and electrics.

When You Are New to Learning Guitar

When you first decide that you want to learn to play guitar, things can be a bit confusing. You're filled with all this anticipation, but most students don't even know where to start out. Well the very first thing you need is a guitar. Yup, before you can understand guitar you in fact require a guitar.

A beginner guitar

Plenty of people actually ask what a good beginner guitar is. My answer is that there is no true beginner guitar. On the other hand, I do have some input for why I think beginners should get a certain kind of guitar. Personally I think its ideal to learn guitar on a pretty Low-cost guitar. Simply because if you learn on a Inexpensive guitar then, not just will you appreciate the more luxurious guitars more, but you will also notice the difference when you upgrade, and probably notice that more pricey doesn't always mean better.

In addition Its much easier for a beginner to learn to play guitar on either a classical nylon string guitar or an electric guitar. Simply because the strings have less tension and they're easier to play without agonizing your fingers. myself I learned on a quite cheap steal string guitar, still, it is actually the most difficult guitar I have ever played. That guitar completely calloused my finger tips because I played it all the time, till I finally upgraded. Now I don't recommend you get a guitar that is tough to play, trust me if I had a choice I would rather the strings be easier to play. But when your guitar isn't perfect, you definitely enjoy better guitars, no matter the price. But if you're an acoustic guitar fan particularly if your on a budget I recommend that you learn guitar on a classical guitar, and most are fairly cheap.

Play Guitar

So now you have your guitar, now you need to learn to play guitar. So, what is the very best way to learn guitar? There are lots of options out there for the novice guitarist. But, which one is the best? Well lets look at the options.

You can learn from a teacher.

If you learn from a personal teacher it could be excellent because you have someone right there with you who is a professional and they can correct you when you mess up. Nevertheless instructors can be very high-priced and they are not always reliable.

You can learn to play guitar from a book

Guitar guides are full of information, and can help you understand chord patterns very easily. Nonetheless books can not consistently teach some techniques, especially if you need to hear the technique. However for theory, scales and chords books are fantastic.

You can learn by video

With video you can truly witness whats going on and correct your techniques. However with videos you feel like you have to keep up with the teacher and your playing and enthusiasm can suffer from this. Especially since its hard to follow tabs or notes when they keep moving...

You can learn to play on-line

Currently If you have a computer this is definitely the finest choice. Learning on-line combines the best of all the previous options. And its usually less than the price of one or two private lessons. Additionally some courses even have certain built in software that will make learning feel like a video game and makes guitar easy. The only thing missing is someone who is actually right in front of you correcting you.

Easy Way to Learn Guitar

Like so many youngsters and teens of today, I had a burning desire to play the guitar. I was really fascinated with the instrument. I knew from day one. My passion was guitar and music. I just had to express myself musically. However, I discovered early that there was no easy way to learn guitar. I was not unduly worried, for me it was a labor of love. I learned to pick up playing guitar very quickly.

Funnily enough, there was only a single string on that beat-up old guitar. Undaunted, I would sound out simple tunes on it. Ones I had learned at school. I would copy songs I heard either on Television or Radio. In my day (I guess I am showing my age) there were no such things as Videos, CD's, DVD's, Mp3's, I pods. Psp and Zune's. Very few people even had record players or records back in the day.

Can you believe I used to pick the tune to "Bonanza" that old TV Western? On a one-stringed-guitar?

It was very difficult. We had to learn to "play by ear." After you heard a tune on Radio. You then tried to remember the melody line and lyrics. You then would have to search the entire guitar fret board until you found the correct notes. This became even more difficult when I had all six strings. Especially when trying to find whole Chords and Chord progressions.

It was a tedious and frustrating experience, but I did it anyway. I was fortunate I had a good ear for music and singing. I loved music passionately.

There were a few other "handicaps to contend with." You learned to be really quick on the uptake. When a song was played on the radio; you needed to be able to memorize most of an entire song. If you were unable to catch the tune the first time around, you had a long wait before the radio station played your second lesson. It was a skill I developed because there was no other choice. If there was an easy way to learn guitar I certainly never knew about it.

We did have a new record player. My oldest sister liked to listen to her corny love songs and she loved country music. I played her Marty Robbins records when she was safely out of the house ha! I was also fortunate that I had a lot of talented people in my family. Many played and sang in bands. I had many relatives who played in top Bands. I got spoiled for choice. My aunt and Uncles were well aware of my huge pre-occupation with Guitar. They took me along to many gigs they did. I was very young at the time.

As long as I stayed quiet and did not show myself. I was allowed to sit in the wings onstage; behind the curtains. I watched the entire performance up close and personal. My uncle, who was lead guitarist, would be part way through playing a song. Without missing a note or a beat, he would walk over to me and ask if I was ok.

I was in guitar Heaven. I would watch him glide back across the stage still playing his guitar. He would sidle up to his Microphone and join in singing with the other members of the Band. This was as good as it gets in my book. I found there was an Easy Way To Learn Guitar I lived it, breathed it and watched my uncles, aunts; cousins and friends play live onstage. It was the most inspirational learning environment ever, for a budding lead guitarist.

Fast forward to the sixties; I had a brand new electric guitar and I was now playing quite a few Jimi Hendrix tunes, I also had a large record album collection to die for. I played successfully as a lead guitarist and vocalist in many Bands over the years, I lived my dreams. In the seventies I played Hendrix, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Clapton, Santana, Felix Papalardi, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanan, early Fleetwood Mac, BB King, Ben E. King, and every good Blues Guitar Player I could find.

I learned how to read Music and Tablature along the way. I did some Teaching qualifications as well. I became a Tutor. I taught Performing Arts and Guitar Lessons for a number of years. I also taught Audio - Technology. I became immersed in music and technology advances. Musically, it has been a long journey for me. I still play guitar and Gig.

I am familiar with most of the advances made in music. I am up to speed with the latest band equipment. I use most new Technologies in Audio and Video. I am up to speed with Digital and computerized guitar sound effects. I am into recording software and use music interfaces and programs to record music and guitar tracks on my PC.

Unlike my learning curve, youth of today are spoilt for choice in Music technology advances. You do have an easy way to learn guitar. You are blessed with every technology imaginable at your disposal. All you need do is to take action. You have DVD's and Video Tutorials as learning aids. You have your own private Guitar Tutor's online and in your home.

You now have electronic tuning devices that ensure you never experience problems tuning your guitar. You are guaranteed perfect concert pitch every single time. You have exciting online games to teach boring Music Theory. You now have Digitech learn-a-lick. (or similar) This is a program that can capture a section of lead guitar phrasing or some licks. It can slow the music phrase down to any slow speed you desire. You are able to learn the most difficult and complex lead phrasing, one note at a time.

This program also stays in the same key. An Audio tape changes key as the music is slowed down. The slower audio tapes are played; sound begins to slur and distort. Learn a lick can be slowed down to any slow speed without changes in key or quality. There are other softwares available that teach an easy way to learn guitar. This program teaches every single note on the guitar Fret board in only 15 minutes. It is quick, easy and lots of fun.

Last and certainly not least, I have scoured the Internet. I have reviewed nearly every online Guitar Course, to find a Musician and Teacher not unlike myself. Who can give you a leading edge program in Acoustic and Electric guitar lessons? A good Teacher well versed in easy Tablature, who can show you a fast, fun filled, modern, new, easy way to learn guitar.
